As a Virtual Assistant and content writer, I strongly believe all Virtual Assistants need to have a blog on their site. If you’re not sure whether you need a blog, I’d totally recommend you read my last blog post on the subject – Don’t have a blog on your VA site? Why you need to think again! When it comes to actually writing blog posts though, many Virtual Assistants struggle with what to write and how to even come up with ideas. Coming up with suitable blog post topics is not something just VAs struggle with either – all service-based businesses tend to have the same issue.
In today’s blog, I’m going to share with you a brief breakdown of the different blog types you can use, as well as a quick look at the different mediums. We’ll then explore what exactly a Virtual Assistant can write about – regardless of whether they’re a new or established VA.
There are so many different blog types available to you!
Before we look at what you can blog about, it helps to understand the different types of blog you can write. Looking at these first will inevitably help you come up with some ideas for blog topics, straight away. However, it will also help open you up to the different possibilities for topics, as you continue reading this blog post.
This is so important, as many business owners get fixated with one or two different types of post – and forget about the rest! As a brief overview, here are 20 different types of post Virtual Assistants can write for their business blogs. - The how-to post – One of the most common types of blog post.
- List post – Usually numbers orientated, popular and easy to write.
- Tips – One big tip or a collection of your top tips around something.
- Case-study – Details of how you completed a project or solved a client problem etc.
- Problem/solution – Related to a problem your target audience is struggling with.
- Link round-up post – Sharing a collection of other people’s URLs to useful content.
- Checklist – Itemised list or simple breakdown.
- FAQ post – Answering questions your target client has.
- Behind the scenes of your business – What you’re working on, where you work from etc.
- Profile (influential person, client etc) – Make sure to let the person know!
- Interview – Someone who may be of interest to your target audience, or someone they could benefit from knowing more about (such as a provider or creator).
- Comparison (products, tools, websites etc)
- Product/tool/service review – Always popular and can be your own products/services too!
- Project showcase (current or past project you worked on)
- Client showcase – How you helped a specific client, more about their business, growth strategy etc.
- Your viewpoint on something in the news and/or relevant to your niche.
- Story post – Something that’s happened to you and/or you’ve experienced, that will benefit your target audience in some way.
- Product tips – How to use a specific product, shortcut to using a product, etc.
- Industry news – Sharing latest findings, statistics etc.
- Promotional – Your own services and/or products, your freebie, affiliate products etc.
Let’s not forget the different mediums!
Of course, writing isn’t the only way to produce a blog. If you’re happier talking, why not opt for a video or audio? Not only are these great for repurposing, but they also appeal to more auditory and/or visual learners.
When it comes to your blog posts, it always pays to have more than just text on the page. Whether this means recording a video, sharing someone else’s, creating graphics, sharing pictures, sharing a meme or gif, or even embedding an opt-in form, think about how you can utilise the different mediums available to you. Yes, this means it may take you longer to pull together a blog post – but it also means your ideal clients are more likely to read it, share it, stay longer on your website, and see how valuable your content can be for them.
What can Virtual Assistants write about?
So we’ve covered the different types of blog you can write about, as well as reminding ourselves that a blog doesn’t have to be just text-based. Now it’s time to make this even more specific for you.
Start with your ideal clients
Your ideal client avatar will come into its own here. What do they struggle with? What do they do? Do you know what solutions they are looking for and what problems and needs they have? How about their interests? What questions are you most commonly asked about and what are their biggest frustrations?
Think outside the box on this too – go with your gut and dig into what you think too. For example, what do you think they need to be educated on? What issues and problems do you see them struggling with – that they don’t even know they have a problem with?
Look to existing clients for inspiration
You can then look to your existing clients and see what commonalities you can find there. What are you most asked to do? What do you see them struggling with that is outside of your service remit? For example, do they struggle with graphic or content creation? Finding a journal that works for them? Switching off from work mode? Sleeping?
They’re all things you can talk about in your blog posts – and also considering creating passive income products around. There’s also the opportunity to potentially solve these issues with guest interviews and blog posts, hiring an Associate VA that specialises in these areas, or even becoming an Affiliate for courses and books on these subjects.
Ask your ideal client
If you’re an established VA – great! Ask your mailing list and past clients what topics they’d like to see on your blog. If you’re new, you may not yet have a mailing list of ideal clients, or past clients, to ask – so make use of social media and other people’s groups. Use keywords to search Facebook groups for problems, questions and shared frustrations. Post a poll of your own in Facebook groups where your target audience hangs out.
Ask simple to answer questions on your social media pages – such as ‘Do you struggle with xxx?’ or ‘What’s your biggest question around [a specific tool, product or service]?’ and ‘If I could solve one thing for you today, what would it be?’
Write about your wins and successes
Think of your blog as a portfolio for your business. Write (or create a video!) about something you’ve won or succeeded at. For example, have you entered a VA award? Were you recently featured as a guest blogger or interviewed somewhere? What did this bring up for you and how can you use this story to help your target clients?
Maybe you’ve hit a financial milestone or are celebrating acquiring your first (or twentieth!) client. One of your clients may have sent you a thank you card or shared a testimonial with you – that you can use to either highlight what you do or share how they can also leave a testimonial for you. Have you just started on a new social media platform or hired a content writer? Maybe you could share some tips on that, or invite them to join you on there or share who you recommend?
Share industry news
This can be specific to your client’s industry or the VA industry, general news – or all three! The various social media platforms always have changes going on, so talk about these. If you’d rather stay away from social media, why not talk about how Brexit is affecting their industry? Other options include new or upcoming awards and surveys, changes in their (or your) industry – and even latest breakthroughs in technology and the online world (such as the increase in AI use etc). If you’re worried that your target audience won’t be interested – come from the angle of ‘what’s in it for them?’.
Don’t be scared of your Virtual Assistant blog
When it comes to blogging for your Virtual Assistant blog, there are so many options available to you. The biggest tip I can give you is to not be scared or put off by that. Instead, make it a goal to actually get started. Pick one type of blog post, one topic you want to write about, and just write (or record, if you prefer!).
For many VAs the biggest hurdle is getting started. The more you write, the easier it will be for you to both come up with ideas, and to write blog posts for your VA business.
I’d personally recommend you set aside a couple of hours, once a month, to get started. You can set yourself a goal of one blog post a week, if you’d rather, but I often find that it’s the mindset that you need to be blogging weekly, that’s actually holding you back from getting started with writing any blog posts at all!
