It’s that time of year where we say ‘goodbye’ to one year and prepare to say ‘hello’ to another. Most people will dutifully stick with tradition and spend some time deciding on their New Year resolutions – I don’t. You see, from what I can work out, there are two main types of people and, depending on what type you fall under – you will be with me or confused!
Type one is the person who looks forward to Christmas but hates the anticlimax of New Year. They get all excited over Christmas, but that is their highlight to the year. New Year just feels like a continuation of the previous year and a complete waste of time. They keep with tradition and make their New Year resolutions on New Years Eve of New Years Day – and joke about how last years resolutions were forgotten by the second or third week of January.
Type two is a person who doesn’t really get that excited about Christmas and when it arrives, they just wish it would hurry up and finish, get out of the way so they can get excited about New Year. For this type of person, counting down to the New Year is exciting and it never comes quick enough. Once the turkey has been eaten on Christmas day, they are biting their tongue in an effort to keep their New Year resolutions to themselves, as they don’t want to act like Christmas doesn’t exist but they already know what their resolutions are and how they will implement them.
As a child I always looked forward to Christmas, but as I grew older, Christmas would always make me feel slightly depressed. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s become so commercialised; it could be that it’s ‘too traditional’ and become so routine that we all know what we’ll be watching, eating, who we’ll be socialising with and who’s going to annoy who. I don’t know, but I much prefer New Year.
New Year is something that can be celebrated as you see fit. Each person has their own way of clearing the previous year with its’ baggage and welcoming in the new fresh slate. If you decide to do something different, nobody cares that you are breaking ‘tradition’ because there isn’t really a ‘traditional’ way to see in New Year (apart from singing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ – if anyone knows the words, that is!).
So yes, I am definitely a type two person. My New Year resolutions are already written down and mapped in my 2012 diary. I know exactly where I am headed and how to get there (and yes, it includes writing!) . And you know what? I can’t wait!
Happy New Year!
